Magnification

Seeing can determine the difference between success and failure!

Have you ever wondered why Dr. Rickards wears those strange looking glasses? Well, even if you haven't, we want to take a moment and explain to you what he does and how it benefits you, our valued patients.

Magnification is an integral part of Dr.Rickards' practice of dentistry. It enables him to see things not normally detected by the human eye. The funny looking glasses Dr. Rickards wears are called, "magnification loupes". They magnify everything he examines by 2-3.3 times it's actual size, enabling him to be more thorough in the treatment of his patients.

Dental Microscope being used to better diagnose a patient

In several instances, Dr. Rickards may use our "Surgical Operating Microscope" for procedures. This piece of equipment resembles something you would see on television during the filming of an operation. Our microscope is one of approximately three in B.C. being used in a dental setting. In fact, our office was the first in B.C. to use a miscroscope in a dental setting! This microscope allows Dr. Rickards to magnify objects (your teeth) up to 40 times their actual size. During a root canal for example, Dr. Rickards will often look for "extra" canals within a tooth. These can easily be less than one-tenth of a millimetre in diameter, and missing these can mean the difference between success and failure for that tooth in the long term. Needless to say, during root canal treatments, the magnification can prove to be crucial.

If you find yourself having a crown, veneer, or bridge preparation done, you will also likely experience the surgical microscope. After the preparations are done using the "magnification loupes", Dr. Rickards will often use the microscope to perfect their work. This allows our Dr. Rickards to do the "cleanest" preparations possible therefore, providing the lab technicians who make the crowns or veneers with a more accurate impression. In the end, you receive the best fitting product we can provide.

The next time you are in to see us for an appointment, feel free to ask Dr. Rickards or any of our team to see the difference magnification can make.
